Facebook ads for Shopify clothing brands: the setup checklist

Most Shopify clothing stores lose sales data before their ads even start. Get the plumbing right first and Meta can actually learn who your buyers are.

Short answer

1. Connect the Facebook and Instagram sales channel and turn on maximum data sharing (pixel plus Conversions API). 2. Make a test purchase and confirm it shows in Events Manager once, not twice. 3. Add UTMs to every ad. 4. Sync your product catalog. 5. Make the product page fast on a phone with Shop Pay on.

Tracking

UTMs on every ad

Use one UTM template on every ad, for example utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign={{campaign.name}}&utm_content={{ad.name}}. Then Shopify's reports show which ad drove which order, and you can check Meta's numbers against your store.

Catalog

Sync your products to a Meta catalog. It powers Shop tabs, catalog ads and retargeting with the exact items people viewed. Keep titles, prices and stock accurate so ads never point at sold-out sizes.

Questions

Do I need the Conversions API on Shopify?

Yes. The Shopify Meta channel can send it for you. Pixel-only tracking misses many iPhone and Instagram in-app browser purchases.

Why do Meta and Shopify show different sales numbers?

Meta counts by attribution window and can include view-through or delayed purchases. Shopify counts orders. UTMs plus a test order help you see how close they are.

Should I run catalog ads for my clothing store?

Use them for retargeting people who viewed products. For new buyers, creative ads with real people and fit usually do better.
