How to sell out a clothing drop
Sold-out drops aren't luck. The brands that sell out build demand for weeks, collect a list, and hit that list first when the drop goes live.
1. Announce early and push people to a waitlist (email and SMS). 2. Run pre-drop Meta ads to grow the waitlist. 3. On drop day, text the list first, then email. 4. Retarget everyone who visited or started checkout. 5. After the drop, run ads to the best sellers while demand is hot.
Before the drop: build the list
- Waitlist page with a reason to join: early access, first pick of sizes, a drop-day perk
- Content that builds hype: sneak peeks, the making of, fit tests, countdowns
- An Instagram broadcast channel to talk to your most engaged followers directly
- Pre-drop Meta ads that send people to the waitlist, so you have a bigger list to hit on drop day
Drop day: hit the list first
Text the list first. People open texts. Then send the email so you reach them both ways. The people who signed up are your highest-intent buyers, so they should hear about it before anyone else.
Catch the people who almost bought
- Abandoned cart and abandoned checkout texts and emails
- Retargeting ads to site visitors and people who added to cart
- A welcome flow for new subscribers: the brand story, best sellers, reviews
After the drop
Don't go quiet. Run post-drop ads on the pieces that sold fastest, use customer photos and reactions as new creative, and start building the list for the next one.
On a small budget
If there's no ad budget yet, build the email and SMS list with organic content first. Once the drop brings money in, put Meta ads on top. List first, ads second.
Questions
How long before a drop should I start promoting it?
Two to four weeks is a good window to build a waitlist and hype. Longer works if you keep posting content that gives people a reason to stay interested.
Email or SMS for a clothing drop?
Both. SMS gets opened faster on drop day. Email carries more story and visuals. Running both reaches people both ways.
Should I run ads before or after the drop?
Both. Pre-drop ads grow the waitlist. Post-drop ads sell to new people while you have fresh proof and demand.
What if my drop doesn't sell out?
Look at where it broke: not enough people on the list, a page that didn't convert, or an offer that didn't give a reason to buy now. Fix that before the next drop.
